Job description
Position title: Midwife ( 2 Pst) (1 for Barawe and 1 For Ceel-Berde)
Reporting to: Head Nurse/Team leader
Location: Ceel-berde and Barawe -Somalia
Job summary:
Midwives are expected to provide advice, care and support for women and their partners and families before, during and after childbirth. They help women make their own decisions about the care and services they access. They care for newborn children, providing health education and parenting support. Midwives are personally responsible for the health of both mother and child and only refer to obstetricians if there are medical complications. They work in multidisciplinary teams in both health Center and, increasingly, community healthcare settings.
Job Responsibilities:
Main duties and Responsibilities:
• Identify potential problems in advance and strategies to overcome them, informing the doctor as appropriate.
• Screening and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections.
• To monitor Ward/ mobile unit workload in relation to staff availability. To ensure appropriate numbers and skill mix of staff are achieved on a 24-hour basis.
• Monitor fetal condition during labor by listening to the fetal heart rate and by observing the color of the amniotic fluid, and act when there is a problem.
• To report any accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards or serious untoward incidents in accordance with the agreed procedures to medical doctor/team leader
• To ensure effective communication systems are in place within area of responsibility.
• Diagnosing, monitoring and examining women during pregnancy;
• Developing, assessing and evaluating individual programmes of care
• Providing full obstetric care, including screening tests in the clinic/ mobile unit
• Identifying high risk pregnancies and making referrals to doctors and other medical specialists;
• Inform women and families about danger signs in pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum and the newborn.
• Confirm that all required observations, prescribed treatment and procedures are properly carried out and documented on patient’s charts or cards.
• Offering support and advice following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death;
• Promote child spacing and help women and families make birth plans
• Supervising and assisting mothers in labor, monitoring the condition of the fetus and using knowledge of drugs and pain management;
• Providing advice and guidance on a safe and timely transfer home
• Promote normality and facilitate normal childbirth
• To contribute positively to achieving targets that will reduce inequalities and improve health outcomes for women.
• To work unsupervised with a caseload of women, within SOS guidelines, Policies and Procedures and SOS codes of conduct, seeking advice from senior colleagues when appropriate.
• To maintain accurate, contemporary and timely care records
• Participates in ward or mobile unit staff meetings chaired by either doctor or team leader
• At all times to protect improve and preserve patients’ health by adherence to infection control
• Participates in the delivery of in-service training for project staff in capacity building program
Skills and qualifications
Essential
• Bachelor degree in Midwifery
• Two years’ experience in busy maternity Hospital or MCH.
• Good counselling and communication skills
• Observing client confidentiality and privacy
• Good experience in BEMONC & Familiarity with CEMONC services
• Able to provide Basic Life Support to women and newborns
• Excellent command in Somali/English languages
• Computer skills (Ms word, excel, internet, computer-based lab results ordering and reporting)
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Critical thinking
